Heavy rain warnings and adverse weather are affecting much of the North Island, with a State of Emergency declared for Ōtorohanga due to flooding and slips.
Rain and gusty winds are forecast for Wellington and surrounding regions over the coming days.
This is significant. Flooded rivers and streams rise rapidly during heavy rain. Tracks near waterways, river crossings, low bridges and gullies can become hazardous, even far from the main rain band.
We should be concerned. Slips, unstable ground and rapidly rising water pose risks for trampers, kayakers, cyclists and beachgoers. Strong winds on ridges and coastal headlands amplify danger.

Before heading out:
- Check your local MetService warnings and Civil Defence updates.
- Avoid river crossings, low roads and exposed tracks.
- Delay high-risk activities in wet, slippery or windy conditions.
Outdoor recreation will be safer once the severe weather has passed and conditions return to normal.
