Facebook Exposes Artificially Coloured Salmon

A facebook post has exposed the use by salmon farms of artificial colouring. The claim follows as such:-
Without chemical assistance, farmed salmon is naturally grey. Because they are fed a synthetic diet of terrestrial grains, soy, and fishmeal instead of wild krill and shrimp, they never develop that natural pink hue.
To fix this, commercial farmers add synthetic astaxanthin to fish feed. These petrochemical-derived additives are synthetic duplicates of natural pigments, manufactured using industrial chemicals instead of nature. Producers even use a trademarked colour chart called the ‘SalmoFan’ to pick the exact shade of “fake” pink they want the fish flesh to turn.
While this cosmetic additive is used to trick your eyes, it exposes a massive regulatory double standard:
* Petrochemical Origins: The synthetic astaxanthin fed to salmon is chemically synthesised from petroleum and is banned from direct human use in food and supplements.
* Banned for Consumers: While you cannot legally buy synthetic astaxanthin at a health store, it is routinely pumped into fish feed to artificially dye the fillet on your plate.
* The SalmoFan Illusion: You are paying premium prices for a customised, synthetic hue designed purely for marketing appeal, not natural nutrition.
“Fake-tanned flesh” is just another reason to skip farmed salmon.

  1. "Kiwi Consumer" says:

Howe does this artificial colouring stack up with food safety regulations?

  2. J B H says:

Fish farming is a “con”. King Salmon in Marlborough Sounds have had severe disease problems and lots of dead fish which I read, they dumped at the Blenheim Refuse Transfer Station. I read there were monthly dumpings of 100 tonnes mstly dead, disease killed fish.
Where was the media in reporting this? Silent.
What about the food fed to King Salmon’s salmon? Full of anti-biotics? Is that healthy?

  3. Anon says:

I just don’t eat fish farm salmon. Ugh!

  4. peter Bragg says:

The food supply deception if every where, coffee is really coffee, the list is a mile long, it would appear that Kiwis have oblivious to what they are buying in there supermarkets, this is a world wide issue and one that every government have failed to manage

  5. John Gornall says:

Rather like consuming processed food – not as nutritious ass the real thing.

  6. David Tranter says:

I don’t know if they’re using chemicals to dye salmon pink in Tasmania but there are serious problems over there too. Surely the whole process is becoming so flawed it has to stop?
