DoC Not Facing Reality about 1080

by Kathy White

I’ve done a lot of interviews with New Zealand scientists who have had their research permits revoked, specimens and scientific research confiscated, who have been trespassed from their area of research, and fired from their research positions by … the Department of Conservation.
Yes, you heard that right.
And then there was the case of Mike Mead, esteemed entomologist and water ecologist. DOC didn’t like what he said about 1080 killing invertebrates. See Mike Mead’s letter to the editor below.
They didn’t like what entomologist Peter Notman said either. Peter Notman said that his research showed 1080 killed vast numbers of different species of insects, and his conclusion was that you shouldn’t drop it where there were rare insects or rare insectivores. And what did he mean by insectivores? He meant birds.
So why does DOC say that 1080 doesn’t kill birds? That is what they say.
And why are they not concerned about it killing insects, when insects are vital food for birds?

  1. "Eco-sense" says:

Ecosystems function the same world wide. New Zealand is no different to other countries. Other countries ban 1080. So —-?

  2. Kris Broad says:

Yes, DoC ignore that 1080 was first developed and patented in Germany, I think it was, as an insecticide. Insects are vital to pollination and to the future health of vegetation.
I am completely baffled by DoC’s ignorance as to the functioning of the ecosystem, to the population upsurge that comes from rats following 1080 drops and blinkered approach to scientific studies that show that rats bounce back with ferocity after 1080, that possums are herbivores and not predators and the by-kill on birds like morepork, falcons, robins, wekas and others and on insects,

  3. B.Duck says:

1080 has been used for sixty odd years to save our endangered species yet DoC still claim many birds such as kea are on the endangered list so much for 1080 saving them.

  4. Tony Ibbotson says:

    Unnnbelivable bullshit

  5. pete says:

DPC also cannot figure out why our kea numbers have been decimated.
It would seem DOC get around their offices with blinkers and ear muffs on. This must be the only way they can avoid hearing the conclusive evidence of them and their actions killing thousands of our native birds
On a side note F&B promote ten eighty as well. Must have a few brain dead over there as well

  6. "Realist" says:

It’s all about departmental greed. Bureaucrats paint a problem either real or imaginary. In latter case of imaginary, spin doctors feed the gullible public and politicians, and the naive government grants vote allocation money.
In this way, bureaucrat’s grand salaries and centrally heated offices are kept going.

  7. Dave Stockward says:

The Mike Meads saga was victimisation by DOC bureaucrats. Shame on those DoC wallies. mike Meads was a highly regarded entomologist but DOC didn’t want the truth aired. Same with Peter Notman.
