The Coalition Government has launched a dangerous assault – via its Conservation Amendment Bill – on New Zealand’s conservation land says a press release by Greenpeace executive director Russel Norman. They are trying to make it easier for mining companies to blast apart and dig up public conservation land. They are trying to open the door to private resorts, gondolas and other commercial exploitation in the heart of our National Parks. They are even trying to rewrite the purpose of our conservation law to shift it away from protecting nature and towards enabling commercial exploitation,” he said. But Russel Norman said “the bill is rotten to its core. Even if the Government follows through on their promise to remove the land sale sections of the Bill, the rest of this Bill is still a massive threat to nature, and we cannot afford to slow down.” “Imagine pristine beech forests in Lewis Pass bulldozed for open-cast mines, wild West Coast rivers choked with toxic mine drainage, and the songs of native birds silenced by the roar of heavy industrial machinery.” “Greenpeace is mobilising the resistance, keeping the pressure on and making sure nature has a voice. With our allies, we have announced a March for Nature in September, and we will be announcing further actions over the coming weeks.” “Imagine pristine beech forests in Lewis Pass bulldozed for open-cast mines, wild West Coast rivers choked with toxic mine drainage, and the songs of native birds silenced by the roar of heavy industrial machinery.” Greenpeace is seeking regular donations to fund opposition action. Potaka’s Conservation Amendment Bill is an insult to the environment and democracy.
What is in the shadows? Corporates waiting to exploit the public domain and take their ill-gotten profits off-shore?
What gives NZ First’s Shane Jones the right to be so arrogant and promote such outrageous law? Did you know, he has NEVER been elected. He’s stood about five times in electorates over the years and none of them have wanted him. So he has used the “list” to worm his way into Parliament.
It’s not just Shane Jones pushing the rapacious exploitation of public lands. Tama Potaka and Chris Bishop are in the front line of the rampaging Philistines.
Exploiting Conservation land is not the brainchild of the politicians that people keep giving credit to, it is the work of influential business moguls when own the politicians. Check out who the donors are to the coalition parties. Remember when they almost convinced Muldoon that we could “chip” all of the West Coasts beech forests (most in National Parks) including those on 30 degree slopes!
Government ministers are open about it – they want publicly owned lands to be used for private profit.
And voters are expected to be grateful.
