The Coalition Government has launched a dangerous assault – via its Conservation Amendment Bill – on New Zealand’s conservation land says a press release by Greenpeace executive director Russel Norman. They are trying to make it easier for mining companies to blast apart and dig up public conservation land. They are trying to open the door to private resorts, gondolas and other commercial exploitation in the heart of our National Parks. They are even trying to rewrite the purpose of our conservation law to shift it away from protecting nature and towards enabling commercial exploitation,” he said. But Russel Norman said “the bill is rotten to its core. Even if the Government follows through on their promise to remove the land sale sections of the Bill, the rest of this Bill is still a massive threat to nature, and we cannot afford to slow down.” “Imagine pristine beech forests in Lewis Pass bulldozed for open-cast mines, wild West Coast rivers choked with toxic mine drainage, and the songs of native birds silenced by the roar of heavy industrial machinery.” “Greenpeace is mobilising the resistance, keeping the pressure on and making sure nature has a voice. Government ministers are open about it – they want publicly owned lands to be used for private profit.
