From time to time it’s worth simply pointing people toward a place and saying: go, see this, experience it for yourself. The Mahurangi–Kaipara coastline, north of Auckland, is one of those places.

Often described as a “big blue backyard”, this stretch of coast offers an unusually rich mix of beaches, bays, harbours and headlands within easy reach of the city. It’s a place where outdoor recreation doesn’t require grand planning or specialist equipment - just time, curiosity, and a willingness to explore.

For walkers, beaches like Omaha offer long, sweeping shoreline ideal for early-morning or evening walks. Even in summer, it’s usually possible to find quieter stretches if you’re prepared to wander a little. Nearby Matheson Bay provides a more sheltered option, popular for swimming and relaxed family outings.

For those curious about the marine world, Goat Island Marine Reserve at Leigh remains one of the country’s most accessible snorkelling locations. Clear water, abundant fish life, and relatively easy entry make it a good introduction for people wanting to experience a marine reserve first-hand. It’s also a reminder that conservation and recreation can, at times, sit comfortably together.
Further along the coast, Tāwharanui Regional Park is a standout destination. With its pōhutukawa-fringed beaches, open headlands and walking tracks, it suits a range of activities - swimming, surfing when the swell is right, short walks, or simply spending a day outdoors away from the city. It’s one of those places that rewards repeat visits, changing character with weather and season.
Inland, the area also offers quieter explorations. Parry Kauri Park near Warkworth provides an easy loop walk through mature kauri forest, complete with boardwalks and stair sections that give just enough elevation to remind you you’re walking, not just strolling. It’s accessible, but still feels like a genuine encounter with forest rather than a manicured garden.
What makes the Mahurangi–Kaipara area especially appealing is its variety. You don’t have to commit to a single activity or destination. A weekend can easily combine a coastal walk, a swim, a short forest track, and a visit to a local market or village. It’s recreation in the everyday New Zealand sense - not packaged adventure, just places that invite use.
For the CORANZ Places series, Mahurangi and Kaipara are worth highlighting precisely because they reflect how many New Zealanders actually engage with the outdoors: informally, repeatedly, and close to home. These are not once-in-a-lifetime destinations. They are places to return to, learn, and become familiar with.
If you’re looking for a summer or shoulder-season destination that offers coast, forest and harbour without requiring long travel or complex planning, Mahurangi and Kaipara deserve a place on the list.
Sometimes the best recommendation is the simplest one:
go and spend a day there - and then go back again.
