Outdoor recreation depends on trust.
People walk tracks, hunt, cycle, run dogs, gather food, and take children into public spaces on the assumption that if an area is open, it is reasonably safe to use. That assumption becomes fragile when land managers rely on chemical spraying while offering little visibility about where, when, how, and under what conditions spraying occurs.
The recent retraction of a highly influential 2000 glyphosate safety review paper does not, by itself, prove glyphosate is dangerous. But it does expose a deeper issue that matters directly to recreation groups: how confidently risk has been dismissed, and how little practical attention has been paid to real-world exposure scenarios.

For CORANZ, this is fundamentally a public access and public health governance issue.
Recreation is about exposure, not laboratory toxicity
Regulatory discussions often focus narrowly on toxicity thresholds under controlled conditions. Outdoor recreation happens in the opposite environment:
- uneven terrain,
- variable wind,
- changing weather,
- prolonged exposure,
- and unplanned contact.
Recreationists are not workers in protective gear. They are walkers in shorts, cyclists breathing hard, hunters pushing through scrub, children touching vegetation, and dogs moving nose-first through sprayed areas.
Exposure does not require misuse. It can occur through:
- spray drift, especially in wind or complex terrain,
- residual contact with recently sprayed vegetation,
- re-entry before residues have degraded,
- and lack of clear public notification.
These are not theoretical risks - they are operational realities.
The access problem: sprayed, but still “open”
Across New Zealand, it is common for:
- tracks,
- reserves,
- road corridors,
- river margins,
- and accessways
to be sprayed and then remain open to public use, sometimes with minimal signage, sometimes none at all.
From a recreation perspective, this raises basic questions:
- How is the public meant to make an informed choice if they don’t know spraying has occurred?
- What assumptions are being made about wind, drift, and re-entry timing?
- Who bears responsibility if exposure occurs - the user, or the manager?
When access is maintained but information is withheld or vague, risk is effectively transferred to the public without consent.
Why the retraction matters here
The retraction of a major glyphosate “safety” review matters not because it rewrites toxicology overnight, but because it undermines the authority-based reassurance model that has been used for years.
When agencies say “the science says it’s safe”, the implicit promise is that:
- the science is independent,
- uncertainties are acknowledged,
- and real-world exposure scenarios have been properly considered.
The retraction shows that at least some of that confidence was misplaced. That makes it entirely reasonable for recreation groups to ask whether current operational practices meet the standard expected for public land.
Wind, terrain, and drift: the uncomfortable realities
Wind is not an anomaly - it is a defining feature of outdoor environments.
Recreationists know this. Many land managers plan spraying windows around it. But public-facing information often ignores it.
Key questions CORANZ should be asking include:
- What wind speeds and directions are considered acceptable for spraying near accessways?
- How is drift risk assessed in gullies, cuttings, ridgelines, and forest edges?
- What buffers exist where tracks, campsites, or popular access points are involved?
- Are “no-spray” conditions actually enforced, or merely documented?
If these questions cannot be answered clearly, public confidence is not unreasonable to withhold.
Re-entry: when is “safe” actually safe?
Another recurring problem is re-entry timing.
Even where signage is used, it is often:
- vague (“recently sprayed”),
- temporary,
- or removed before residues have realistically broken down in shaded or damp environments.
For recreationists, “open” is interpreted as “acceptable to use”.
If agencies know that re-entry assumptions depend on weather, sunlight, and vegetation type, then reopening without explanation is not precaution - it is convenience.
What CORANZ should be calling for
This is not a call for blanket bans. It is a call for adult governance.
CORANZ is well placed to push for:
1. Public spray registers for recreation areas
Not buried PDFs - clear, map-based records showing:
- location,
- date,
- product,
- and access implications.
2. Mandatory notification for high-use recreation sites
If spraying occurs:
- signage should be clear,
- persistent,
- and meaningful to non-specialists.
“Recently sprayed” is not information.
3. Conservative wind and access rules
Where public access exists:
- stricter wind limits,
- larger buffers,
- and delayed reopening should be the norm, not the exception.
4. Explicit recognition of recreational exposure
Policy documents should explicitly acknowledge:
- non-worker exposure,
- children and animals,
- repeated and cumulative contact.
If recreation is mentioned only as an afterthought, risk is being misallocated.
This is about trust in public land management
Outdoor recreation relies on trust that public land is managed with the public in mind.
The glyphosate paper retraction does not prove harm - but it does prove that assurances can be overstated, and that scrutiny often arrives late.
For CORANZ, the message is measured and reasonable:
If chemicals are used on public land that people are invited to access, then transparency, conservative practice, and meaningful public notice are not optional extras - they are the price of trust.
That is not activism.
That is basic public stewardship.
The cynic in me smells a rat – actually a whole colony of them. The science is clear; glyphosate is harmful to humans. Exporters are already getting warnings about glyphosate in our exports; well done Andi in raising the issue.
A widely used environmental product also known as Roundup, which needs to be fully reviewed, in particular the safety protocol to the environment. It would be good if a review on the toxicity to whitebait is considered, as it may explain the demise of their habitat and adult whitebait populations .
“Trust the science” has become a convenient shorthand for ending debate. But science is not a single, settled thing - it is a process, and that process depends on independence, transparency, and the willingness to revisit conclusions when assumptions change.
When influential papers are later withdrawn because of ethical or conflict-of-interest concerns, it doesn’t mean science has failed. It means scrutiny finally caught up. What should concern the public is not that science evolves, but that certainty was presented long before it was justified, often by selectively citing reassuring conclusions while downplaying uncertainty.
Trust in science isn’t earned by repetition or authority. It is earned by openness, by acknowledging limits, and by ensuring that evidence guiding public-land decisions is robust, independent, and appropriate to real-world exposure - not just ideal laboratory conditions.
Yeh, “Trust the science” - until it’s retracted
Agree, “Trust the science” is often used as a conversation-stopper, not an invitation to scrutiny. Yet time and again we discover that what the public was told to trust rested on narrow evidence bases, undisclosed conflicts, or assumptions that collapsed once examined closely.
This doesn’t mean science is corrupt. It means science is vulnerable when commercial, regulatory, or political incentives reward certainty over caution. When papers that once underpinned confidence are later withdrawn, the problem isn’t public scepticism - it’s premature reassurance.
Real trust in science is not blind faith. It comes from transparency, from independent replication, and from acknowledging uncertainty where it exists. On public land, where exposure is borne by the public, not the decision-makers, “trust us” is not enough. The standard must be higher - and visibly so.
