Re bKiwi deaths, many years ago a veteran hunter Jack Wire of Hastings went up to the Napier-Taupo highway to an area that had been blitzed by aerial 1080. He found dead kiwi. On his way out he met a DoC/Forest and Bird party entering the area. He told them of the kiwi in very forthright tones. They wanted to know where the kiwi were. He told them in strong language what a bunch of f—idiots they were. Jack was normally very gentlemanly.
It stands to reason, some worms absorb 1080 and slowly die. The kiwi seeing a distressed prey, grabs it and gets a dose of secondary 1080 poison.
In any case, the worm population, a premier food of the kiwi, gets decimated so less kiwi.
For a country that’s struggling with the economy it was left by the Labour government, with struggling health sector, the Department of Conservation’s poison programme is ecologically destructive and a sheer waste of millions. I’ve seen a figure of $2 million plus for each 1080 drop on the average.
It seems crazy that conservationists like Clyde have to point out the obvious, Rakiura kiwi seem prolific,so why this approach?
Ive not had the privikege if visiting Rakiura, but every hunter l know thats been there has a kiwi story, its part ofvthe appeal of going there. Surely on this island there is a unique opportunity to try something different, rather than the crazy aerial poisoning that doc seem so reliant on. The bykill of kea from 1080 drops is well documented, surely its obvious that this will be happening to other non target species. ZIP’s intentions are clear in this case, kill everything non native including the whitetail deer, and make money while doing it!
Despite our intelligence as a species .. we can be so incredibly stupid.
We can be so gullible when we are told lies .. particularly, when they are told by people who we believe should be telling us the truth.
Most notably, Hitler and Goebbels discovered this, and used it to their terrible advantage. They showed us .. if you tell a lie that is big enough .. and you tell it often enough .. you can manipulate a whole population into going along with it .. even when the result is an horrific massacre.
Those of us who are awake to, and seeingof, such manipulations can recount several examples of where this has happened .. and/or is happening .. in contemporary New Zealand.
There is perhaps no better example .. than Aerial 1080.
It is so frustrating to be a witness to it .. to know the terrible truth .. and to be so seemingly, totally powerless to do anything about it.
DoC and Conservation Minister Potaka have the authority to stop the poisoning of Stewart island by ZIP. We expect nothing less, in the public interest.
Stupidity is doing the same thing again and again. The wide-ranging appeal of existing baits means that a wide range of creatures take up the baits and become affected by with what they’re laced.
End of story.
Unless/until species-specific baits ar developed we wil contiue to have ‘bykill’, and the current levels show how far we hae come so far. Sloppy baiting = bykill.
I met a couple of professional “conservationists” a few years ago who had variously worked for DoC and the Kauri Die Back quango. It’s fair to say their take on issues of interest to CORANZ’s core demographic were… incompatible. Where I’d like to think we are rational (killing Kea and Kiwi to save Kea and Kiwi is bonkers) they saw themselves as anointed guardians of Gaia herself (one of them was literally a self confessed Pagan) and where we’d think that tax payers hard earned $$s should be spent sensibly and even then, to further the interests of said taxpayers, their attitude was that the budget was theirs, literally theirs, to be dispensed with as they saw fit. They aren’t our friends and don’t make decisions based on sound reasoning so we can’t expect them to act rationally (first, do no harm) or even have concern for our desire for thriving ecosystems, managed in a way that balances flora, fauna and John Citizen who pays for it all.
Having made 65- 70 visits to Stewart Island since early 1970 have always heard if not seen kiwi plus no end of kaka kakariki and dozens of other species, often when hunting they were a pain in the bloody arse as the racket they made wouldn’t allow you to hear animals moving around. To poison with 1080 will not work it never has and never will. I’m afraid the DoC have brainwashed themselves and many others like the Forest and Bird into thinking that mass poisoning is saving our birds.
In two drops I’ve monitored have found several dead bush worms lying on top of the ground.
It is no longer possible to believe that NZ’s 1080 policy is meant to preserve wild life. The only logical reason for 1080 use is to destroy wild life. NZ’s native species are being kept to a very low level through the use of 1080 and it is remarkable that so many native species are still extant. DOC logic tells us that these species are dwindling and the remedy is more 1080. Predator-freeNZ has now joined OSPRI, DOC and regional councils as Nation-wide spreaders of 1080. On a more local level homespun enviro-groups are now also spreading 1080 as well as the myriad other poisons at their disposal.

Ninety million is the budget for Stewart Island
The closed mindset of DOC over 50 years in the face of overwhelming evidence is hard to believe,
