Introducing CORANZ Activities

Outdoor recreation in New Zealand takes many forms. Some involve skill and preparation; others are simple, familiar, and close to home. What they share is that they all depend on being able to get to places and use them safely and responsibly.

The Activities category brings together a range of outdoor pastimes practised by New Zealanders every day - from fishing and cycling to photography, geocaching, and quiet family outings. Each activity is presented on its own terms, without assuming experience, specialist equipment, or membership of any organisation.

This is not a guide to elite sport or remote adventure. It is about:

  • Everyday recreation
  • Formed tracks, margins, paths, and access points
  • Activities that fit into real lives and real time
  • Shared use of public space
  • Inclusion across age, ability, and confidence

Some activities are done alone, others socially. Some are practised for a lifetime without progression; others open doors to deeper involvement. All are valid.

How to read this category

Each Activity stands alone. There is no hierarchy and no expectation that one leads to another. Readers are free to:

  • Recognise activities they already enjoy
  • Discover new ones they hadn’t considered
  • See how familiar places support multiple forms of recreation

Where helpful, articles may point to clubs, groups, or online resources as optional starting points, while recognising that many people participate independently.

Why Activities matter

Access to the outdoors is often discussed in abstract terms. Activities make it concrete.

By focusing on what people actually do, this category quietly shows how:

  • Towns, coasts, rivers, parks, and tracks are used in practice
  • Small changes in access can have large effects
  • Shared spaces support many forms of recreation at once

These articles are intended to inform, encourage, and reflect how outdoor recreation is lived - not to prescribe how it should be done.

A shared landscape

The Council of Outdoor Recreation Associations of New Zealand (CORANZ) brings together organisations representing a wide range of outdoor interests. The Activities category reflects that breadth by recognising multiple ways of being outdoors, without privileging one over another.

Whether your recreation involves a rod, a bike, a camera, a map, or simply time to wander, you’ll find a place for it here.
