A Gun Register Won’t Stop Gang Shootings

Sporting Shooters Assn., Media Release

Following the latest horrendous Texas school shooting our Prime Minister is receiving accolades while visiting the US for her decisive action to ban semi-automatics following our own March 2019 Christchurch massacre.  Meanwhile back here in New Zealand our Police Minister Hon Poto Williams believes the spate of 13 gang related shootings across Auckland in the past week would be prevented with a $ 208 Million of taxpayers money spent on a gun register.

The fact is says Chaz Forsyth President of the Sporting Shooters Association, “while law abiding licensed firearm owners handed in their semi-automatics, career criminals and gang members did not, so there is still a large pool of firearms including semi-automatics circulating on the black market.  A register will not capture these illegal firearms because criminals by definition will not register them and even when seized by police are invariably untraceable because identifying numbers are ground off.”  Added to this the pool of black market arms is being supplemented with guns smuggled in from abroad.

What this shows is that while the PMs decisive action may have reduced the number of semi-automatics in the country, the subsequent arms legislation changes have done nothing to impede the criminal use of firearms by gangs and neither will a register. Funding for the register should be reallocated to ridding New Zealand of its gangsThis would have a two fold benefit, reducing gangland shootings and illicit drug supply, whereas a register will achieve nothing other than satisfying the governments curiosity as to roughly how many guns are in New Zealand, a no brainer really.

Another related opinion:

OPINION: There was another reason the PM would have been hesitant to preach about gun control; it’s called the pot calling the kettle black.

NZ Firearm register to be set up by Ausie Company

Sydney-based government software firm Objective Corporation has won a five-year contract to set up a New Zealand police arms information system, as part of the nation’s tighter gun controls. The company’s software will provide a secure digital database of all firearms transactions and legally owned firearms in NZ and is estimated to bring in $13 million for the ASX-listed company.

Western Australian Gun Owner set alight after stealing his guns in home invasion.

So the criminals break in and threaten to set him on fire until he opens his safe to steal his pistols and WA Police, who helped the crims target him by allowing the West Australian to publish their map of licenced owners addresses, say they “don’t know how they found out” he had guns?

It’s nauseating to see the Prime Minister in the USA telling Americans how her government by ‘pragmatic’ means dealt with the Christchurch mosque attack. The police bungled it, the politicians bungled it, Ardern bungled it. Did she tell the USA that Tarrant should never have been granted a firearm licence, if police had been competent?
Did she tell the USA her rushed law targeted law abiding citizens while giving gangs and criminals, more weapons? Did she tell USA of the big increase in gang shootings, using illegal firearms?
A firearms register will achieve nothing. In fact, criminals by ‘leaks’ and other means (?) will know what firearms are at what address. Stupidity again by government and police.

The only good thing about a Gun Register is going forward from the day it is implemented NZ police will know how many guns are brought into NZ. There will be absolutely no other good point of this exercise that like all other countries will eventually be scrapped as they cost too much to run and maintain.
Not one of my customers I talk to about the new coming system intend to register their guns. They are all very skeptical of Govt planning for this to be a free system to register. They all believe the Govt will reneg and then start charging an annual registration fee per firearm owned. If this is the case then yet again the Govt will only be able to guess at the amount of guns already in NZ
Pointless, headless, useless intention by yet again the very inept and clueless Labour Govt

In the culture of any group or organization of people there will always be certain shared beliefs, agendas and prejudices. That’s just the way it is. Get over it.

Political parties are not any different.

In the Labour Party the prejudices are against males, white people and especially those who have guns.
If you doubt this it is because you have never been an active member.

While Jacinda is over in the USA exploiting another tragedy and bragging about the failed confiscation in NZ, Poto and others are avidly pursuing their ambition to criminalize everyone that has firearms.

Strategies include promoting more fear of guns, a costly gun register, strict discrimination against shooting clubs and ranges and longer delays in granting and renewing licenses.
All intended to make compliance difficult and criminalize otherwise decent and law abiding citizens.

Oh the gangs, the gangs. So scary.
Yes they do not abide by the rules and can be dangerous but are they really much of a threat to people who do not bother or associate with them?
Maybe just not to me or have others had similar experiences with NOT being threatened or harmed by gang members?

How the heck is criminalizing people that are not gang related supposed to be beneficial in reducing gang related crimes that the police seem inadequate to deal with anyway.
Maybe trying to improve our collective social and economic standards might be more useful than perpetuating this fear of the gangs but we don’t seem to have government employees who understand anything about this.

“Horrible Gun People”, you need to understand that you are the subjects of prejudice and discrimination by the awful “Omnipotent Moral Busybodies” who are influential members of the national and Labour Parties.

    C. S. Lewis got it right.
“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.”

These obnoxious creatures have control of the main political parties and the politicians they chose to inflict their wishes on the rest of us.

It is time to fight back and beat them at their own game of political activism and influence.

Join the National and Labour Parties.
Find out where and when they have their little secret meetings and front up.
Learn who they are and what they are up to.

Get more people to come along and start changing the culture and agendas of the parties so that they actually serve the people instead of their own selfish agendas.

    Who Me?

Yes, YOU and any other ordinary sane working people who are over silly government arrogance, control of their lives and incompetence.

Democracy works but only by and for the people who are active and influential.

    Uninformed voters? Not very much.

It cannot be overstated, that by definition crims & gangs don’t follow registrations or any laws; being tribal in nature they fancy themselves as warriors and will remain 1-100 side steps away from any authorities trying to run them to ground, [ & they know it]. As we speak right now a number of firearms’ cache will be hidden away & there will be no compliance with ANY laws no matter the Macbeth “sound & fury”it will “signal nothing” to these thugs living by stone age codes, UTU & might is right.

What a waste of time and money. Too many people now don’t trust the government and there will be more guns not registered because of this. Having a register is like saying when all the dogs in the town are registered that it will end the barking. What a lot of wallies we have who are continually doing things against the people who put them there.
We hand over our sovereignty to the Government when we elect them as they say all the right things and then when in power do the opposite.

  7. Lew says:

What a pointless waste of money and time, put the time money and effort into illegal firearms owners.

  8. Jim Hilton Batchelor Science Hons Biology 1971 says:

In the USA there are plenty of studies which show that there is LESS serious crime in states where it is easy to own and carry firearms. If someone had been carrying a firearm at the Mosque in Christchurch a lot of lives would have been saved and the gunman would have likely died at the scene. Hysteria about firearms is exactly that and has to stop. Fear about firearms is being promoted by people who have secret agendas. Fortunately many of us can intuit the motives of these people. Oppressive legislation about firearms is already failing just as responsible firearm owners predicted after the political grandstanding after the Christchurch shootings. The right to “bear arms” is a cornerstone for the constitution in the USA and needs to be in ours too. Yes we do have a Constitution Act 1853 but since 1986 our Politicians claim it does not exist. Constitutions protect freedoms so we need to find our constitution again because increasingly politicians and big business cannot be trusted and are trampling on freedoms our ancestors died for in world wars.

  9. Frank Henry says:

What’s the point? A register of lawful firearm owners firearms won’t mean a thing relative to crime and gang drive by shootings. The gangs are unlicenced for firearms and using illegal ill-gotten firearms. Wake up politicians, police and Mr Cahill.
